Indian award for Suu Kyi


NEW DELHI, Apr 2: An Indian social organisation, Sarhad will confer it first ever International Bhagwan Mahavir World Peace Award 2012 on Aung San Suu Kyi.
Announcing the Award, Kuldip Nayar, a veteran journalist told the media that Aung San Suu Kyi had accepted in writing and has also conveyed that she would herself come in person to receive the Award.
The award ceremony will be held in Delhi shortly. President of India will confer the Award, Kuldip said.
The Award carries Rs 11 lakh and a citation.
A Pune based organisation Sarhad has been working for conflict resolution for over 20 years in India, in areas of Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and North East India. This is an attempt to go extend its work in South Asia to honour personalities who have dedicated their live for the cause of dignity of life, barring India.
According to the NGO’s committee members, Aung San Suu Kyi, the fire band of Myanmar is a true follower of Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence through her action.
While speaking about the her life and dedication for the cause of democracy in Maynmar, which had been under military rule for over two decades, Kuldip said the recent turn of event is a beginning of a process. Happenings in Myanmar is important for India for neighbourly relations he said.
Committee members also spoke on the need for humanitarian bonds between people of Punjab, Kashmir and North East states. And that the members of the organisation had also visited Irom Sharmila in Manipur.
