Census 2011 at a glance - LD June 2011


· India now has a population of 1.21 billion according to the latest census
· 181 million people increases from the last census nearly equivalent to Brazil population
· Indian population is now bigger than the combined population of USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan and Bangladesh
· Among the states Uttar Pradesh is the most populous with 199 million people
· Of the total population 6237 million are males and 586.5 million are females
· The density of population is highest in New Delhi (11.297 persons per square kilometres followed by Chandigarh 9.255)
· India now has a child sex ratio of 914 females against males and overall sex ratio increase to 940 against 933 in 2001 census
· Among the states, Kerela with 1084 has the highest sex ratio.
· Literacy rate goes up from 64.83% to 74.04%. It has a male literacy rate of 82.14% and female literacy rate of 65.83%.
· Kerela with 93.91%, continues to occupied the top position in literacy while Bihar with 63.82 remains at the bottom.
The Census 2011 was done in two phases, house listing and housing census and then population enumeration. An estimated 2.7 million officials had fanned out across the country to undertake the exercise.
The decadal exercise the 15th head count of India’s population since 1872 to create a data base on demography, economic activity, literacy and education, housing and household amenities, urbanisation, fertility and mortality, social structure, language, religion and migration. This census covered 640 districts and 5924 sub-districts. The cost of the couting exercise is 22,000 million.
